Legendary songwriter and musician Linda Perry is opening up about her collaboration with actress Shailene Woodley on the upcoming Janis Joplin biopic. In an exclusive statement to Entertainment Weekly, Perry shared new plot details about the highly anticipated film, which will focus on Joplin’s final days before her tragic death at age 27. “I’ve been waiting decades for this movie to be made,” Perry said, expressing her excitement about the project. “There are no words to convey how honored I am to be included in what I believe to be a raw and honest look into Janis Joplin’s last days.” Joplin, a rock icon, passed away from a heroin overdose in 1970, leaving behind a powerful musical legacy.
Perry, who was once rumored to play Joplin herself in a previous biopic project, is now helping Woodley prepare for the role. “Shailene Woodley’s emotional commitment and dedication to Janis is inspiring. I believe her!” Perry added. “Shailene lives for the art and I can’t think of a better person to portray such a powerful, emotional, and complex artist.”
Woodley, who will both star in and produce the biopic, revealed earlier this month that she discovered a newfound confidence in her singing abilities while preparing for the role. She’s been working closely with Perry, who has been helping her find her voice. “It turns out I can also sing outside of the shower,” Woodley shared during an appearance on Live With Kelly and Mark.
The untitled Janis Joplin biopic has yet to announce a release date or additional casting details, but fans of the rock legend can look forward to a poignant and emotionally charged portrayal of her life. Perry, who is also involved as a collaborator on the project, promises a film that will do justice to Joplin’s complex and unforgettable legacy.
