Deadpool & Wolverine pushed boundaries with its signature mix of vulgarity and wit, but not everything made it into the final cut. A particularly audacious Mickey Mouse joke was scrapped from the superhero sequel, as revealed in Disney‘s recently released screenplay on its awards-season “For Your Consideration” page.
The Line That Was Too Much for Disney
The scene in question takes place about halfway through the film, as Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) meet a new superhero team in the Void, including X-23 (Dafne Keen), Elektra (Jennifer Garner), Blade (Wesley Snipes), and Gambit (Channing Tatum). Deadpool quips about the absence of Magneto when Blade tells him, “He’s dead.”
In the film, Deadpool responds:
“F—, now Disney gets cheap? It’s like Pinocchio jammed his face in my ass and started lying like crazy.”
However, the screenplay reveals an even dirtier original line:
“F—! What, we can’t even afford one more X-Man? Disney is so cheap. I can barely breathe with all this Mickey Mouse c–k in my throat.”
Apparently, the latter joke was deemed too risqué for Marvel’s corporate overlords at Disney.
Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds’ Pact
Director Shawn Levy previously acknowledged that only one line in the film was vetoed. In an August interview with Entertainment Weekly, Levy said:
“We have made a pact, Ryan and I, to go to our grave with that line, but I will say that it was replaced with an equally dirty line of dialogue about Pinocchio shoving his face up Deadpool’s ass and starting to lie like crazy.”
Levy joked that Reynolds’ audacity knows no bounds:
“Ryan’s response to ‘Can we clean it up?’ was to come back with something even more outrageous. That’s Ryan Reynolds for you — audacious to the very edge.”
Keeping Secrets and Easter Eggs
The screenplay also sheds light on the filmmakers’ efforts to prevent leaks about the movie’s numerous cameos. Characters were given codenames in the script:
- Elektra became “Eleven”
- Blade was “Billy”
- Gambit was “Gatsby”
- X-23 was “Lemon”
Additionally, Chris Evans’ cameo as Johnny Storm (the Human Torch) was disguised under the alias “Jonathan Byers,” a nod to Levy’s work on Stranger Things.
Why the Joke Matters
Deadpool’s humor has always pushed the envelope, but this particular joke highlights the tension between the franchise’s irreverent tone and Disney’s more family-friendly brand. While the Pinocchio replacement line still toes the line of decency, the cut Mickey Mouse joke is a reminder that even Deadpool has his limits — as dictated by Disney.
Fans React
Fans of the Deadpool series are unlikely to be surprised by Reynolds’ boundary-pushing humor and will likely celebrate the film’s ability to retain its edge under Marvel’s watch. Deadpool & Wolverine continues to be praised for balancing outrageous humor with the signature grit of its characters.
Deadpool & Wolverine is currently playing in theaters, proving once again that even sanitized Deadpool is still plenty raunchy.
