HBO executive Casey Bloys has addressed the recent creative friction with Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, who has been candid about his concerns with House of the Dragon, HBO’s hit spinoff of his fantasy epic. Speaking during HBO’s 2025 preview event, Bloys reassured fans that, despite the tension, Martin remains a crucial part of the network’s creative team.

“We love George, obviously,” Bloys said, acknowledging Martin’s deep influence on HBO’s success. “George and Game of Thrones really changed the course of HBO… so I want him to be happy. He’s very important to me, to us.”

Bloys likened the relationship to a marriage, where creative differences can sometimes cause tension. “When we put shows together, we’re in a marriage together, and marriages can be difficult… Especially when [showrunner Ryan Condal] is making creative decisions adapting work, it can be fraught,” Bloys explained. “Would I prefer that everybody get along and it goes well? Of course, but it’s a creative process. It’s always going to have its bumps.”

Martin had previously expressed reservations about House of the Dragon straying from the events of his 2018 novel Fire & Blood, worrying about a “butterfly effect” that could impact future storylines. Although he briefly posted and then deleted a blog about these concerns, HBO acknowledged that adapting Martin’s work requires some creative liberties. An HBO spokesperson noted that they share Martin’s love for Fire & Blood but emphasized the need to make tough choices in adapting the complex material for television.

Despite Martin’s occasional critiques, both he and HBO remain committed to collaborating. Multiple Game of Thrones projects are in development, including a feature film. Bloys expressed optimism about the movie, saying, “I think it could be fun and interesting… Is there a story that’s worthy of being in theaters and a big spectacle? I think it would be fun.”

While creative disagreements may arise, it’s clear that HBO and Martin plan to continue expanding the world of Westeros together, with the shared goal of bringing fans thrilling new stories set in the Seven Kingdoms.
