Andy Samberg recently revealed a scrapped Golden Globes bit that was meant to pay homage to a memorable moment from A Star is Born. During an appearance on The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast, the SNL alum recounted how the cut segment, intended for the 2019 Golden Globes (which he co-hosted with Sandra Oh), was inspired by Bradley Cooper‘s character peeing himself during the Grammy Awards scene in the 2018 film.
In the planned sketch, Samberg would come out dressed as Cooper’s character, Jackson Maine, and interact with Oh, leading up to an embarrassing onstage accident. “I was dressed like Jackson Maine, and Sandra was going to introduce the next category by saying, ‘Our next category is bubbling,'” Samberg said, imitating Cooper’s drawl, “‘Yo. Did we win? Did we win, baby?’ And Sandra was supposed to react, ‘Oh, no. He’s been drinking again.'”
The bit made it through initial planning stages, even to the point where a “pee rig” was set up in Samberg’s pants to simulate the mishap. However, it was ultimately cut by the network for being “too lowbrow.” Samberg humorously pushed back against the decision, saying, “The Globes are super high-brow? Everyone’s drunk and looking at their phone the whole show. I really don’t think it’s gonna matter.”
Although the pee rig malfunctioned during rehearsal—leading to pants that stayed dry despite Samberg being “soaking wet”—the actor was disappointed the scene never saw the light of day. Even Sandra Oh expressed regret over the lost gag during a 2022 appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, saying, “It’s actually really hard to show pee. It’s harder than you think.” For Samberg and Oh, the bit remains an unrealized comic moment, though they both still laugh about what could have been.
